Ball Launcher: Mobile 2D Base Defense - Learning Android Game Development
Defend Your Base: A Mobile 2D Catapult Adventure
Ball Launcher is a personal project born from a desire to master Android game development. This 2D base defense game challenges players to control a catapult to fend off relentless waves of enemies, while earning in-game currency to upgrade their defenses and unlock new capabilities. Inspired by classic titles like Defender, this project served as a comprehensive learning ground for essential mobile game development features.
What it Entailed: Bringing a Classic Genre to Mobile
The goal was to create an engaging and feature-rich mobile base defense experience. This involved not only core gameplay mechanics but also implementing systems crucial for monetization, progression, and a dynamic player experience, all within the Android ecosystem.
Process & Methodology
Developed as a personal project with a focus on learning and practical application, the development process involved several key areas:
Core Gameplay Mechanics:
* Implemented the central catapult mechanic, allowing players to aim and fire projectiles by dragging and releasing.
* Designed an intuitive touch-based control scheme suitable for mobile devices.
Progression & Monetization Systems:
In-Game Currency:
Developed a system for earning coins by defeating enemies.
Shop Implementation:
Created an in-game shop where players can spend currency on weapon upgrades, new projectiles, or defensive enhancements.
Google API Integration:
Explored and integrated Google Play Services for essential features such as:
In-App Purchases (IAP):
Allowing players to buy currency or special items.
Google Ads:
Implementing ad monetization to support the game.
Dynamic Game Systems:
Complex Wave Spawning:
Designed a system for progressively challenging enemy waves, increasing in difficulty and variety over time.
Level Management:
Implemented systems to transition between different game levels, with environments changing as players progress through stages.
Game State Management:
Created robust game states to manage the flow of gameplay, including ‘Wave Starting’, ‘Wave Running’, ‘Wave Completed’, and transitions to shop or next level states.
Learning Objectives:
* Gained practical experience in full-cycle Android game development.
* Mastered essential game monetization and user engagement features (IAP, Ads).
* Developed a deep understanding of game state management and complex AI/enemy spawning systems.
